Constance McMillen

Constance McMillen decided to fight the archaic school policy which requires senior prom dates to be of the opposite sex even if there's a memo that was sent to students on Feb. 5, the school district laid out the criterias for bringing a date to the prom. The problem, though, is that Constance McMillen is a lesbian, and petitioned for the school to allow her to bring a girl as her date.

The cancellation notice was a response from demands from McMillen and the ACLU for the school board to drop its prohibition of same-sex dates at the prom.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi got involved with McMillen’s fight and asked the Itawamba County school district to change their policy and allow the 18-year-old to bring her girlfriend, who is also a high school student, to the prom but the district decided to cancel the event instead.
